Woodlands

Most of my woodland photography is taken during Autumn when the forest floor comes alive with a wide variety of mushrooms and other fungi. I hope to expand my gallery with wider woodland shots in the future; I just need to spend more time exploring our woodlands and resist my draw to the coast.

Wistman’s Wood

Wistman’s Wood is a high-altitude oak wood situated in Dartmoor; it is one of Britain’s last remaining temperate rainforests. Some of the trees are hundreds of years old and have contorted over the years, transforming them into individual characters. The dense fog helped with the chaos of this woodland and helped separate my three main subjects; it truly is a photographer’s paradise.

Porcelain Fungus

Spotted growing on a fallen tree by my son whilst walking through Parkhurst Forest. These really stood out as they glistened in the dull light of the forest.

Glowing Mushroom

Not really a glowing mushroom, just my first and probably my favourite attempt at light painting to create the glowing mushroom effect. This one was separated nicely from a group growing on a fallen tree, again in Parkhurst Forest.

Greatwood Copse

Greatwood Copse is a small copse situated near Shankiln, and during Spring, wild garlic thrives here, the smell is intoxicating.

Limelight, Firestone Copse

These two mushrooms were found growing on an old, decomposing tree stump in Firestone Copse. They stood out because of their size; their tall stems seemed to blend in well with the tall, straight trunks of the pine trees in the background.

Protection, Parkhurst Forest

These two bonnet mushrooms were catching some light filtering through the trees, to me, it looks like the smaller one is seeking protection underneath its larger relative.

Fungus Family, Firestone Copse

On a very wet, miserable day, we once again decided to go back to Firestone Copse for some macro photography. We found a fallen tree which was covered in hundreds of these tiny mushrooms. I found this group which stood proud on top of the log, which isolated them and gave a good, clean background.

Sentry, Firestone Copse

This lone shield mushroom seemed to be on the lookout, growing by itself on a branch above the forest floor.

Threatened, Parkhurst Forest

These mushrooms were part of a large ring; they were too irresistible to try and make a photograph from. I eventually found this group, which seemed to tell a story of the larger group backing away, being threatened by the smaller ones on the left.
