A wildlife photographer is certainly something I am not, but it is something I thoroughly enjoy and would like to take further. Most of my wildlife photography is spent up on my local downs, watching and photographing the Stonechats and Dartford Warblers.
Wildlife
Grey Heron
A Grey Heron amongst the surf, catching some golden light as the sun set over Steephill Cove.
Perceptual
I wanted to capture the Stonechats perching on these fresh, unfolding ferns as I found these very photographic in their own right. On this particular morning, they came in very close, and I was able to get some detailed shots whilst keeping some of the environment in the frame.
Dawn Chorus

Meadow Brown
This Meadow Brown butterfly, as common as they are, really caught my eye. The combination of the contrasting colours and the patterns of the ferns made for a striking image, in my opinion.
Rivalry
As the name Stonechat suggests, their call sounds like two stones being banged together. On this morning, there was a lot of noise because of the presence of some females, which the males were competing for. They will fan their tails as a warning to other males, which I managed to capture in this photograph.
Little Egret
On a wet and overcast day on the River Yar, this Little Egret came very close to us whilst we were watching some visiting Avocets. I took the opportunity to photograph it as I can’t usually get this close without spooking them.

Preening Stonechat
On this late summer evening, my son and I spotted this isolated perch in an area where the Stonechats seemed to be feeding. We set up and waited in the hope that one would land on this perch and give us a nice, clean shot with a minimal background, our patience was rewarded.
Dipper
When visiting the Brecon Beacons, we were excited about the possibility of spotting and even photographing one of these incredible little birds. We were fortunate and had a few sightings; we even got close enough to get some shots that I was very happy with.
